“Toyota reaches $1.2 billion settlement to end probe of accelerator problems”
Background and Solution to the Problem
It is reported by (Douglas and Fletcher, 2014) that Toyota reaches a $1.2 billion fine as a financial penalty due to the poor use of accelerators inherent in most of the vehicles they produced so far. All of the financial penalty imposed at the moment will be directly moved into the government’s coffers. Due to these accelerator problems, there are around 400 wrongful deaths with other injuries that have been reported to Congress, safety regulators, and federal prosecutors. It has also threatened the overall global image of the company before its customers and other stakeholders due to these problems. The higher authorities of Toyota even knowing that this has happened by their automakers still giving wrong statements and denied it. They are not taking this responsibility on their shoulders because they don’t know how many vehicles are made and sold in the United States with the same problems. On several recalls, now the government officials decided to place significant fines only on automakers rather than every employee of the company. While they will be facing no criminal penalties under the Vehicle Safety Act.
It has also been reported by Douglas and Fletcher (2014) that Toyota staffers have also sent a memo to their company headquartered in Japan to warn about this uninterrupted acceleration problem caused by floor mats. They further explained that even receiving more evidence about the pedal problem, still, they are not informing the federal safety officials as required by law. They have made plans to change the pedal design but reported in oral ways rather than in writing having fear of government officials and the image of the brand is at risk.
